Elderly Ladies

Vanderhorst St., Charleston, S.C.

I occasionally flick though the Craiglist "Strictly Platonic" Friends bulletin board. I can always respect someone looking for a compatible friend. Most of the postings are for young people but here is one my age:

When I was a lad those'd be called "shut-ins."

It was an expansive term, covering many maladies, real and imagined, from Mrs. Rochester in the attic to Wilkie Collins' Woman in White.

About to turn 55, I find the reference point of that age as elderly, well, more than a little distressing. Shall I give up my joggling board and adopt widowers' weeds?

"Strictly Platonic"? Never heard of it, or the more scandalous boards on the same page and that's the story I'm sticking too. ;)

Waldo - That is what jumped out at me...not used to thinking of myself as "elderly". Let's stick to the joggling boards, shall we?

Beach Bum - Heheh. Always entertaining.

I learned joggling board etiquette from a farmer in his 90s. I will insist on similarly unbecoming behavior pretty much forever. Someday we must start at opposite ends of one and see where we end up. Conversationally, of course.

Wow, 55 and elderly??? I sure hope not. I'm not THAT far from it. Goodness. Bless her heart. I was picturing some sweet, 80 year old woman when I heard the word elderly.

I'm 56. Recently, I had this conversation with my 8-year-old.

Clisby (as Joseph takes my hand): Thanks for helping your old mom.

Joseph: MOM. You're not THAT old. You'll have another 30 years.

Clisby: Thanks, honey.

I know! 55 elderly? I only use it when I want a senior discount at the movies. No one dares question my white hair :)))
